・成立過程

12世紀後半、シュプレー川の両端、現在のミッテ地区周辺にベルリン(Berlin)とケルン(Cölln)という2つの街が形成された。歴史的文書に両者が初めて記述されるのは1237年(ケルン)と1244年(ベルリン)。1307年、ベルリンとケルンは統合される。

At the end of the 12th century, the city emerged from the two merchant settlements Berlin and Cölln, located on both sides of the Spree river in what is now the Mitte borough.

Berlin dates its official founding to 1237, the year of the first recorded mention of Cölln. The first documentary reference to Berlin followed in 1244.

On 1307, Berlin and Cölln form a union in order to protect and expand their rights against the margrave. Twelve aldermen from Berlin and six from Cölln hold their meetings in the new town hall they share. Each town has its own administration and budget, maintaining internal independence while presenting a united front to the outside world.

ベルリンの都市構造

・地形

標高のは34 - 115m。中心市街地に目立った起伏は見られない。

・水系

シュプレー川が市街地の中心を東西に貫く。

・緑地

市内には公園が多く整備されている。

・街路網

ウンターデンリンデン周辺、クーダム周辺は整形の街区、広幅員の街路網が多い。

シュプレー川以東には不整形の街区と曲線の街路からなる地区もある。

・路線網

地下鉄、Sバーン、トラムが整備されている。広域交通の駅は通過型駅舎のベルリン中央駅、東駅等がある。

・城壁の跡

博物館の島、赤の市庁舎周辺が城壁に囲まれていた範囲。

・ベルリンの壁跡

1961年に東西ベルリンを隔てる壁が建設された。実際には2枚の壁とその間の空白地帯で構成された厚みのあるものだった。壁の設置は旧東ベルリン政府によって行われたものであり、全て東ベルリン領内に建設された。1989年ベルリンの壁崩壊後はその空白地帯の整備が進んでいる。
